The short answer
  • The ATV tour costs from ฿1890 per adult rider, ฿1490 per adult passenger and from ฿1190 for children, with rides of 1 or 2 hours.
  • The Hanuman World zipline starts from ฿1390, with courses of 10, 18 or 32 platforms lasting from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • ATV riders must be at least 8 years old and passengers at least 4, while zipline age and size limits are best checked on the tour page before booking.
  • The ATV gets you muddy and works your arms, while the zipline is cleaner but involves stairs, bridges and heights.
  • If you cannot choose, the ATV ride with Flying Fox and Rope Bridge gives you a taste of both in one trip.

It is day four, the beach has done its job, and someone in your group says the words: "Let's do something with an engine, or something high up." You have one free day and two very different ideas. That is the zipline or ATV Phuket question, and I hear it from friends every single season.

Both are jungle adventures, both come with hotel pickup, and both are great fun. But they feel nothing alike. One is noise, mud and steering. The other is harnesses, height and that drop in your stomach before you let go.

Zipline or ATV Phuket: What Is the Real Difference?

The ATV tour is a guided off-road ride on your own automatic quad bike through jungle, mud and mangroves, while the zipline is a treetop course where you fly between platforms on cables. On the ATV you are in control of the machine; on the zipline you are clipped in and the staff are in control.

The mud sections are the best part of the ATV ride; wear clothes you are happy to leave a little brown.

The ATV tour takes place at Phuket ATV Park in Thalang district, in the green northeast of the island. The route runs through tropical forest, rubber and palm plantations, a mangrove forest and out to a hidden beach. The quad bikes are automatic 200 cc machines, so there are no gears to worry about.

The zipline is at Hanuman World, a jungle adventure park in the rainforest hills. You move along a course of platforms linked by ziplines, sky bridges, abseils and spiral stairs. Instructors clip and unclip you at each stage, and you follow them through the trees.

Put simply: if you like driving, choose the ATV. If you like views and a bit of a fear rush, choose the zipline.

Which One Is More of a Thrill?

The zipline gives a bigger adrenaline spike because of the height, while the ATV gives a steadier, longer buzz from speed, bumps and mud. Nervous people often find the ATV easier to enjoy, because they set their own pace.

The treetop walkways look scary from below and feel solid underfoot; the first step is the hardest one.
The treetop walkways look scary from below and feel solid underfoot; the first step is the hardest one.

On the zipline, the thrill comes in short bursts. You stand on the edge, look down at the canopy, and step off. The longer courses add more lines, plus abseils where you are lowered down from a platform, which is the bit that makes many people squeal.

On the ATV, you control the throttle. If you want to go slowly, you go slowly. If you want to hit the puddles with a splash, you can do that too, within what the guide-instructor allows. The thrill builds as you get more confident, which for most beginners happens within minutes.

Fear of heights is the deciding factor here. Someone who freezes on a balcony will probably not enjoy a 32-platform course. On the other hand, people who think they are scared of heights are often surprised: the harness system feels very secure, and the shorter course is a gentle introduction.

For the true thrill-seekers, Hanuman World also has a Roller Zipline that twists through the trees and a luge on a 650-metre track where you control your own speed. The World+ ticket adds the Jungle Roller Coaster, Sky Bridge and lunch to the zipline, so ask which extras your ticket covers before you go.

My honest take on the thrill question: the zipline gives the better stories and videos, the ATV gives the bigger grin over a longer stretch. First-timers on the zipline tend to be quiet on the first platform and shouting by the third. First-timers on the ATV tend to be careful for five minutes and then aim for every puddle.

How Much Physical Effort Does Each Take?

Both are manageable for anyone with average fitness, but they tire you in different ways. The ATV works your arms and shoulders over bumpy ground, while the zipline asks for stair climbing and walking in the humid heat.

Steering a quad bike through mud and over roots is a workout you feel the next morning, mostly in your forearms and shoulders. It is not hard, but on the 2-hour ride with the advanced off-road trail, you will be glad of the stops.

The zipline looks passive, since gravity does the work on the cables. But between lines you walk, climb steps and cross bridges in rainforest humidity. The longest course, 32 platforms over about 2 hours, is the most tiring. The 10-platform course is about 30 minutes, which is very easy going.

A few honest notes on who might struggle:

  • People with back or neck problems may find the ATV bumps uncomfortable. The zipline is usually gentler on the spine, though landings can jolt a little.
  • People with knee problems may find the zipline stairs harder than the ATV.
  • Pregnant travellers should skip both and choose something calmer.
  • Anyone who overheats easily should book a morning slot for either activity.

What Are the Age Rules for Kids?

On the ATV tour, children can ride their own quad bike from 8 years old, and from 4 years old they can join as passengers. For the zipline, the age and size limits are not in our notes here, so check the tour page or ask us before you promise the kids.

Kids on their own ATVs get a guide-instructor close by; younger children can ride as passengers instead.

The ATV rules are clear: riders from 8, passengers from 4, and adult rates for ages 16 to 60. Everyone gets a helmet, gloves and shoes, plus a raincoat on rainy days. There is a safety briefing and practice on a training track before the real trail.

The pricing reflects that. An adult rider pays from ฿1890, an adult passenger from ฿1490, and children from ฿1190. If you have a nervous child, starting them as a passenger with a parent is a good way to see if they enjoy it.

For the zipline, parks like this usually set limits by age, height or weight for safety reasons. I would rather not guess the exact numbers, because they matter. Message us with your children's ages before booking, and we will confirm which course they can do.

From experience, kids aged around 8 to 12 tend to love the ATV more, because they get to drive something. Teenagers often go for the zipline because it looks good on video.

How Dirty Will You Get?

On the ATV you will get muddy, and that is part of the fun. On the zipline you mostly get sweaty, not dirty.

At low tide the hidden beach on the ATV route is shallow enough to wade far out, a nice way to rinse off some of the mud.

The ATV route has muddy sections where everyone gets splashed, especially on the way back from the mangroves. The park provides shoes, so you do not ruin your own, and there are lockers and a changing room at the camp. Bring a full change of clothes and a plastic bag for the dirty ones.

In the rainy season, the trails are wetter and the mud is deeper. Some people love this, some do not. If you hate getting dirty, the ATV is honestly not your activity.

The zipline is a cleaner day. You will sweat in the humidity and your hands may get a little grubby from the gear, but you can go straight to lunch afterwards in the same clothes. Wear closed shoes, shorts or light trousers, and tie long hair back under the helmet.

How Does Each One Fit Into Your Day?

Both are half-day activities with hotel transfer included, so either one leaves you the rest of the day free. The ATV runs at 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00 daily, with pickup 30 to 90 minutes earlier depending on your hotel.

The ATV park is in Thalang, about 40 to 60 minutes from Patong, Kata and Karon. Free hotel transfer covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao. Choose between a 1-hour ride, a 2-hour ride, or a 1-hour ride with a Flying Fox and Rope Bridge.

The zipline tour is listed as 3 hours, with courses on the cables from 30 minutes to 2 hours. It makes an easy morning or afternoon, and it leaves energy for the beach or a sunset dinner.

Can You Do Both in One Day?

Yes, if you have the energy, and the easiest way is the ATV ride with Flying Fox and Rope Bridge, which combines quad biking and a short zip across in a single trip. If you want the full zipline course as well, it is better to do the two on separate days.

The Flying Fox on the ATV combo is a much shorter taste than a full zipline course, a nice first try for kids.

The ATV combo is my top tip for families who cannot decide. The children get to drive, everyone gets a zip and a rope bridge, and you are back at the hotel in time for a swim. It is a taste of the zipline, not the full thing, so set expectations accordingly.

Doing a full ATV ride and a full zipline course on the same day is possible on paper, but it makes for a long, hot, tiring day with two sets of transfers. Most people enjoy each one more with a beach day in between. If you really want both on one day, message us and we will help you line up the timings.

A sensible pattern: ATV in the morning slot when it is cooler, beach or pool after lunch. Zipline another day, in the afternoon, with a shower and dinner afterwards.

Ready to choose? The ATV suits drivers, families with kids from 8 and anyone who loves mud, and the zipline suits view-lovers and people chasing a height rush:

So, Who Should Pick Which?

Pick the ATV if you want to drive, get dirty and see the wild side of Phuket. Pick the zipline if you want height, views and a cleaner, shorter adventure.

If your group is split, do not force everyone into one activity. It is perfectly normal for half the group to go muddy on the ATV while the other half flies through the trees, then meet for dinner and compare stories. Here is how I would match people to each one:

  • Couples: the zipline for the photos, the ATV if one of you loves engines.
  • Families with kids aged 8 and up: the ATV, or the ATV with Flying Fox combo.
  • Families with younger kids: the ATV with the little ones as passengers from age 4.
  • Groups of friends: either, but the ATV mud fights are hard to beat.
  • People afraid of heights: the ATV, without a second thought.
  • People who hate dirt: the zipline, every time.

If you would rather swap the jungle for water, the white water rafting trip in Phang Nga is another good adrenaline day, and the rest are on the home page with all Phuket tours. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a driving licence for the ATV tour in Phuket?

No. The quad bikes are automatic 200 cc ATVs, and no driving licence or previous experience is needed. You get a safety briefing and practice on a training track first.

What happens on the ATV tour if it rains?

The ride goes ahead in light rain and you get a raincoat on rainy days. The trails just get muddier, which many people actually enjoy.

How many ziplines are on each Hanuman World course?

The 10-platform course has 3 ziplines, the 18-platform course has 9, and the 32-platform course has 16. They take about 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours respectively.

What should I wear for the zipline?

Wear closed shoes, comfortable shorts or light trousers and a T-shirt. Leave loose items like hats and sunglasses in your bag before you go up, and tie long hair back.

Is hotel transfer included for both activities?

Yes. Both the ATV tour and the Hanuman World zipline include round-trip hotel transfer. For the ATV, the free transfer covers Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao.

Can two people share one ATV?

Yes, one person rides and the other sits as a passenger. An adult passenger pays from ฿1490, and children can ride as passengers from 4 years old.

Which is better for a rainy day in Phuket?

The ATV copes better with rain, since mud is part of the fun and raincoats are provided. On the zipline, wet weather can make the day less comfortable, so check with us on the day if heavy rain is forecast.
